What to expect during a treatment
|
In addition to the standard form of history taking patients have come to expect from physicians, you will also undergo an osteopathic structural and functional examination. Visits always require manual touch, both for diagnostics and treatment, sometimes requires pharmacological support, often require nutritional intervention, and always require post treatment strengthening for long term stability. Initial visits can last up to one hour and focused follow-up visits take 30, 45 or 60 minutes depending upon the complexity of the visit required. Patients are treated in an appropriate position, lying on their back, front, or side and occasionally in a seated position. At times the patient may be asked to change positions or to participate in some way in the treatment process. Accommodations are always made to make the patient as comfortable as possible. |
What to wearPatients are treated fully clothed, except for shoes. Wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing, or bring some with you, when possible. Please no sharp objects. Belts, buckles must be removed prior to treatment. Loose pants are preferred. Please refrain from perfumes and strong fragrances, as some of our patients are chemically sensitive. It helps to be as relaxed as possible before your treatment, so please refrain from consuming stimulants such as coffee and nicotine right before your treatment.

What to expect after a treatmentTypically, patients feel very relaxed and peaceful after a treatment. Occasionally patients experience one or two days of feeling tired or mildly sore. This is normal, often referred to as a “treatment reaction” and can indicate that the treatment process is continuing and that the injury pattern or dysfunction is starting to heal. The time it takes one to heal is dependent on many factors, but in general, the more chronic the issue, the longer it may take. I would usually expect to see some significant signs of improvement within the first two to three treatments. True healing involves respecting the healing process with both the physician and patient setting realistic goals and reevaluating from each session. |
What to do after a treatmentBecause osteopathic treatment alters the dynamics of tensions held by the tissues and fluids, I recommend that patients “take it easy” for the first two to three days after each treatment. In other words, get adequate rest, limit or eliminate high impact or intense work-outs, avoid excessive alcohol or caffeine, and keep well hydrated with water. I recommend at least 2.5 to 3 liters of water a day, especially after treatment. |
